Renewables such as solar pv, solar hot water and geothermal can be a great way to take that final step towards energy-independence, and treading more lightly on the Earth. They should be done AFTER you have insulated and air sealed home appropriately, and undergone energy conservation measures. Then you can properly size the new equipment.
